Counter Flashing
Counter flashing is metal flashing installed over step flashing to help keep water from getting behind the flashing and into your home. It is commonly found around chimneys, masonry walls, and other roof-to-wall transitions. When properly installed, counter flashing works together with step flashing to create a durable, watertight roofing system.
What Is Counter Flashing?
Counter flashing is the outer layer of flashing installed over step flashing or base flashing. While step flashing directs water away from the roof, counter flashing covers and protects the top edge of the step flashing, preventing water from getting behind it.
On masonry chimneys, counter flashing is typically embedded into the mortar joints and overlaps the step flashing below. This allows each piece to move independently as the roof expands and contracts with changing temperatures while maintaining a watertight seal.
Without properly installed counter flashing, water can work its way behind the flashing and eventually cause damage to the roof deck, wall sheathing, ceilings, or interior finishes.
Where Is Counter Flashing Used?

Around masonry chimneys
Along brick or stone walls where the roof meets the wall
At some roof-to-wall transitions
