Intake Ventilation

Intake ventilation allows fresh outside air to enter your attic through vents located near the lower portion of the roof, typically at the soffits. It is one half of a balanced attic ventilation system and works together with exhaust ventilation to help regulate attic temperature and remove excess moisture.

What Is Intake Ventilation?

Intake ventilation is designed to bring fresh outside air into the attic. As warm air naturally rises and exits through the exhaust vents near the roof peak, cooler outside air enters through the intake vents to replace it.


This continuous airflow helps maintain a balanced ventilation system throughout the attic.

Without adequate intake ventilation, exhaust vents cannot perform efficiently because there is not enough replacement air entering the attic.

Where Is Intake Ventilation Installed?

The most common location for intake ventilation is the soffit, which is the underside of the roof overhang.


Common intake ventilation products include:

  • Vented aluminum soffit

  • Vented vinyl soffit

  • Continuous soffit vents

  • Individual soffit vents

  • Edge intake vents used on homes without traditional soffits


The type of intake ventilation used depends on the design of the home and the available airflow.
