Roof Ventilation

Roof ventilation is a system that allows fresh air to enter the attic while allowing warm, moist air to escape. A properly balanced ventilation system helps regulate attic temperatures, reduce moisture buildup, improve energy efficiency, and extend the life of your roofing system.

What Is Roof Ventilation?

Roof ventilation is one of the most important, and most, overlooked parts of a roofing system. While homeowners often focus on the shingles they can see, the attic ventilation system plays a major role in how well the roof performs throughout the year.

A properly designed ventilation system creates continuous airflow through the attic. Cooler, fresh air enters through intake vents near the lower portion of the roof while warmer, moist air exits through exhaust vents near the roof peak.

This constant movement of air helps regulate attic temperatures and reduces moisture that can build up inside the attic.

Roof ventilation is not designed to cool your home. Its purpose is to protect the roofing system, attic, insulation, and structural components by allowing proper airflow.

How Does Roof Ventilation Work?

A balanced ventilation system uses two types of vents:

Intake ventilation allows outside air to enter the attic, usually through soffit vents located along the eaves.

Exhaust ventilation allows warm air and moisture to escape through vents installed near the highest point of the roof, such as ridge vents or other approved exhaust vents.

As warm air naturally rises, it exits through the exhaust vents while fresh outside air replaces it through the intake vents. This continuous airflow helps keep the attic dry and properly ventilated.

Both intake and exhaust ventilation are required. One without the other can reduce the effectiveness of the ventilation system.

Why Is Roof Ventilation Important?

Proper ventilation provides many benefits throughout the year.

It helps:

  • Reduce attic heat during the summer.

  • Remove excess moisture from the attic.

  • Reduce the risk of mold and mildew.

  • Help protect roof decking from moisture damage.

  • Improve the effectiveness of attic insulation.

  • Reduce the potential for ice dams during the winter.

  • Extend the life of the roofing system.

  • Support manufacturer installation requirements.

Typical Cost

Roof ventilation is typically evaluated as part of a complete roof replacement.

The cost depends on the size and design of the roof, the existing ventilation system, and whether additional intake or exhaust ventilation is needed to properly balance the attic.

Investing in proper ventilation during a roof replacement is often more cost-effective than making changes after the new roof has been installed.

Why It Matters in Michigan

Michigan homes experience hot, humid summers and cold, snowy winters. Without proper attic ventilation, excessive heat and moisture can build up throughout the year.

During the winter, warm attic temperatures can contribute to snow melting on the roof, which may increase the risk of ice dam formation. During the summer, excessive attic heat can place additional stress on roofing materials and insulation.

A properly balanced ventilation system helps your roof perform better in every season.

Our Recommendation

At VanderLaans, we evaluate the attic ventilation system as part of every roof replacement.

We believe a new roof should include more than just new shingles. Proper intake and exhaust ventilation are essential parts of a complete roofing system and help protect your investment for years to come.

Did You Know?

Many roofing manufacturers require proper attic ventilation as part of their roofing system requirements. Even the highest-quality shingles can experience reduced performance if the attic does not have balanced ventilation.
