Window Sash

The window sash is the portion of the window that holds the glass. On an operable window, the sash is generally the moving component and consists of the sash frame and glass.

How the Sash Moves

  • Double-hung: both the upper and lower sash can move.

  • Single-hung: the lower sash moves while the upper section is fixed.

  • Casement: the sash swings outward.

  • Awning: the sash opens outward from the bottom.

  • Slider: the sash moves horizontally.

Fixed or picture windows do not have an operable sash, although manufacturers may use the term fixed sash for the assembly holding the glass.

Can a Damaged Sash Be Replaced?

Sometimes. Depending on the manufacturer, age and construction, the sash or individual sash components may be repairable or replaceable without replacing the entire window.
