Pivot Bar
A pivot bar is a small piece of hardware near the bottom of the sash on many single- and double-hung windows. It connects the sash to the balance system and helps the window operate.
What Does It Do?
The pivot bar helps support the sash and, on many double-hung windows, allows the sash to pivot inward for cleaning or service.
Signs of a Broken Pivot Bar
The sash will not stay open.
One side of the sash drops or feels loose.
The window is difficult to operate.
The sash will not tilt properly.
The sash has disconnected from the balance system.
Can It Be Replaced?
Often, yes. Pivot bars come in many shapes and sizes, so the replacement must match the window and balance system. On older windows, the original part may no longer be available.
