Window Lock / Sash Lock / Night Latch

Window locks do more than provide security. On many windows, the lock also helps pull the sash into its proper position and compress the weatherstripping to create a tighter seal.

Common Types

Sash or Sweep Lock: Common on hung windows and pulls the meeting rails together.

Integrated Lock: May combine the locking and tilt functions into one piece of hardware.

Automatic Lock: Engages when the sash is fully closed.

Night Latch / Vent Latch: Allows the window to be opened a limited amount for ventilation while restricting it from opening farther. It is a secondary feature and not a substitute for the primary lock.

Why Is My Window Hard to Lock?

The sash may not be fully closed or could be out of alignment. Balance problems, debris, worn hardware or frame movement can also contribute. A lock should secure a properly positioned sash rather than being used to force the sash into place.
